1. Are Plastic Bottles Safe?
News media stories have alerted the public to a growing threat to our health: plastic bottles.

Plastic bottles were once thought to be miracles of modern science as they allowed us to preserve and store foods for convenient use. Indeed, most of us use plastic bottles every day.
Plastics are made from coal, natural gas or (most commonly) petroleum.
They have been around for almost 200 years.

Unsafe choices
Plastics in the human body look remarkably similar to hormones.
Some look like male hormones, others like female hormones.
Yet, they are not hormones; they are artificial substances completely unusable to the human body. They tend to accumulate in hormone tissue around the body and cause inflammation.
If Inflammation is the problem Nopalea is the Solution.

Many plastics have been directly implicated in health-related concerns.
For example, in the book Living Downstream, Sandra Steingraber details numerous disease clusters related to plastic manufacturing.
Ms. Steingraber suffered from breast cancer. She lived downstream from a plastics manufacturer.
In graphic detail she discusses how certain plasticizers (chemicals used in making plastics) actually cause disease.

According to another organization, Healthy Child, many plastics are especially damaging to children.

Plastics are identified by a numbering system from the American Chemistry Council.
The number is stamped on the bottom of a plastic bottle in a little triangle (numbers outside the triangle are not relevant).

According to Healthy Child, several numbers are simply too toxic to be safe for children – or anyone else!
They include numbers 1, 3, 6 & 7.
Number 7, for example, contains Bisphenol A (BPA), a plastic chemical known to disrupt brain chemistry in ways similar to ADHD, schizophrenia and autism.
BPA is similar to testosterone
It is harmful to women and girls and even more harmful to men and boys
(Maybe BPA is one reason why ADHD and autism are more prevalent in boys?)

Safer choices
Again, according to Healthy Child, several resin-code numbers are safer choices for our children and for us
Numbers 2, 4 & 5 are safer choices.
Number 2 is the only one recommended as safe for drinks and beverages.

Conclusion
Plastics are inherently unsafe in large amounts.
However, with two centuries of use it seems that small amounts in our environment are tolerated without ill effects.

2. Cracked Skin: What Can It Mean?
Cracked Skin: What Can It Mean?

Do you have cracked skin around your heels, on your hands or at the corners of your mouth? Each of these conditions may be described as a failure in the protective nature of your immune system. And they each tell a story about life balance and lifestyle choices, as well as your environment and even genetics that affect your health.

Heel cracks
Fissures called xerosis form around the edge of the heel as the skin dries out. The more we stand on our feet - and the older we get - the more likely we are to experience heel fissures. However, xerosis is not an inevitable part of aging or standing. Many people who stand all day or survive to age 100 don't have heel cracks. What is different between those who get them and those who don't? Frequently, it is nutrition, exercise, rest and stress management.
Heel cracks appear most commonly in people as they age, it is true. So does diabetes.
My experience tells me that heel cracks commonly appear as we lose our ability to balance our glucose (blood sugar). They are more common in people with pre-diabetes and diabetes. Control your blood sugar and you can often help control the cracking in your heels.

Two nutrients are important in glucose management: zinc and Omega essential fatty acids. Zinc helps control blood sugar, helps improve mental function, helps reduce the number of colds and viruses that affect you and even helps with ringing in the ears (tinnitus). Essential fatty acids help produce more lubrication (sebum) in the skin of the heels and help speed up healing. Consult with your healthcare provider if heel cracks:
• Become painful
• Become so deep they begin to bleed
• Become infected

Hand cracks
Fissures affect the hands as well as the feet. However, the causes are not the same. For example, cracked skin on the hands can be a sign of an autoimmune disorder such as Sjogren's or psoriasis - inflammatory conditions appearing in the skin. I say "appearing in the skin" because psoriasis is a condition involving the whole body. Psoriasis and other skin disorders causing fissures in the hands and fingers may be autoimmune disorders - a condition where the immune system attacks normal, healthy skin and destroys it.

Interestingly, essential fatty acids are often effective in teaching the immune system to "work smarter, not harder." They do not "boost" the immune system or bolster it in any way. (In an autoimmune disorder you do not want to "boost" your immune system because that causes more damage.) Instead, essential fatty acids along with Vitamin D help the immune system more clearly identify healthy and unhealthy tissues so it may react appropriately.

Not to be overlooked, the immune system is the most intrinsically involved body system in the mind-body connection.
Any stress, large or small, is immediately reflected in the immune system.

Mouth cracks
Infections from tooth abscess to thrush can cause cracks in the corners of your mouth. Autoimmune conditions including celiac disease can as well (celiac disease is triggered by an extreme allergy to wheat and other gluten-containing grains). Toxins also cause cracks in the corners of the mouth. For example, fluoride in toothpaste and too much Vitamin A can both reach toxic levels and cause cracking and fissures in the lips.

The most common cause of dry, cracked lips is dehydration
. Drink pure water and make sure you have enough essential fatty acids and minerals to hold that water in your skin.

Our skin says much about our life. It is a special window into our immune system. For healthy skin we must learn to listen as our body speaks to us. 3. The Link Between Blood Sugar, B12 and Energy
In times past we have discussed the link between Vitamin B12, homocysteine (HCY) and several health conditions.
Now letÂ’s discuss how diabetes and high blood sugar can affect B12 levels and effectiveness.
Vitamin B12 assists in creating enzymes in your body that keep you healthy and full of energy.
One key enzyme is MMAM (methylmalonic acid mutase).
If this enzyme is not nourished by B12 dangerous levels of MMA (methylmalonic acid) build up in your bloodstream and choke your energy.

The cells in your body and brain suffocate from toxic MMA.
B12 detoxifies MMA.
Diabetes and high blood sugar prevent B12 from detoxifying MMA.

Understanding B12 levels
When a person has a blood test for Vitamin B12 they are usually given a range that is within normal or too low.
In my opinion a blood test for Vitamin B12 by itself is among the most worthless blood tests we do for three reasons:

1. The values are wrong.
People experience a loss of energy inability to concentrate and bad moods when B12 drops below 400 pg/ml.
Yet labs say that a person is still normal when their blood levels drop to 200 less than half of what is really ideal!

2. B12 is very dependent on its family of B vitamins (folic acid, biotin and Vitamin B6).
Even if B12 blood levels were normal you would be functionally deficient in B12 if your levels of these other B vitamins were too low. You may see this imbalance because of elevated levels of toxic homocysteine (HCY).

3. As your blood sugar rises (and generally among people over 50), toxic levels of MMA can accumulate in the bloodstream because high levels of blood sugar and, possibly, high levels of stress hormones, blunt the effectiveness of B12.
Your blood levels could be normal for B12 but you are still functionally deficient in B12! A true picture of blood levels of B12 can only be seen in the context of HCY levels (ideal: 6.3), MMA levels (methylmalonic acid ‐ ideal 0.17) and Vitamin B12 levels above 400 (ideal above 450).
Anytime a fasting blood sugar (glucose) is above 99 (ideal: 85), you should also have your B12, HCY and MMA levels tested.

What to do?
The real key in understanding Vitamin B12 metabolism is in understanding its function
. Vitamin B12 must have B6, biotin and folic acid in order to energize your brain and lift your mood.

4. Managing the Symptoms of Menopause
Menopause is the natural end of a woman's reproductive age.
It signals the new era of post-menopause.
It usually begins with a gradual decline in hormones (and fertility) after age 42.
The classic age range of menopause is between 49 and 56, with 51 being the average age of menopause.

Menopause is a normal, gradual process of adjustment lasting many years.
It occurs "asymptomatically" – without symptoms.
If you are experiencing symptoms, then there is a problem.
The most common signs of imbalanced menopause are hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes and insomnia.

Hot flashes
The most distressing and common signs of imbalanced menopause are hot flashes and night sweats.
When I was in school we actually measured significant temperature changes in a woman having a hot flash – up to 70F! (Many of our volunteers preferred the term "power surges" to "hot flashes.")
Hot flashes occur as a result of a disturbance in homeostasis – the ability of your body to maintain a normal balance in changing circumstances – and are often regulated by serotonin.

Temperature regulation occurs mainly in the hypothalamus, an organ deep in your brain that links your nervous system to your hormone system.
It is the gland that turns on the thyroid when we are building muscle and turns on the adrenal glands when we are under stress.
The hypothalamus responds to hormones in the blood and hormones found in our food and water.

Natural plant-based hormones are found in foods such as seeds (flax, sesame, sunflower), legumes (soybean, garbanzo bean, green bean), nuts (chestnuts, almonds, peanuts), fruit (apricot, dates, blueberry), and herbs (black cohosh, dong quai, fennel, chasteberry and damiana).

Night sweats

6. Losing Those Summertime Blues
There is an old song with the lyrics, "There ain't no cure for the summertime blues.
"Now, the grammar may be atrocious, but the song recognizes a particular type of the "blues" that hit many during the summer months.
Let's talk about what it is and how we may actually be able to find a cure for the summertime blues!

SAD
A condition associated with wintertime is called SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder (affecting our emotions in this case).
People experience SAD when they don't get enough sunshine.
The remedy is pretty simple: more sunlight.
Nutrients that can help with SAD during the wintertime include Vitamin B-12, Vitamin D

Summertime blues may often happen for a similar reason: too little sunlight.

7. Tips for Healthy Travel
The TriVita Team recently toured Australia to launch our premier product, Nopalea™ .

During the tour we took eight flights of varying lengths, visited five cities (Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane) with completely different weather patterns – from tropical and sunny to cold and rainy – and stayed in five different hotels. Every few days I changed my sleep patterns, eating habits and water consumption.
It was a recipe for disaster

However the entire team survived because we planned early and took the necessary precautions.
Below is a discussion of what we did and how you can prepare for healthy travels as well.

Critical travel issues
Three critical issues faced us as we left.
They would be a continual annoyance until about three weeks after our return:
• Sleep
• Water intake
• Immune system function
Getting sick on a trip is no fun – especially when there is work to do!
Infections and inflammation frequently target people with compromised immune systems.
We breathed contaminated air, endured dehydration and poor sleep, and suffered from restricted activity.
We survived because we prepared.

In preparation for our tour we increased our water and Vital C™ consumption and we all agreed to do a Vital C Flush.
We also ate a low-fat diet, as higher fats tend to promote jet lag.
We began to adjust our sleep schedules to match the new time zones even before we left:
going to bed a bit earlier and getting up earlier. It made the transition just a little easier.

We focused on Essential #2:
Drink Pure Water. Instead of ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight, we increased to 2/3 ounce of water per pound of body weight. (Take your body weight in pounds and divide into thirds. Two-thirds the number of pounds of body weight is the number of ounces of water you need.)
Yes, that meant frequent trips to the washroom.
But, it also meant less dehydration.

Arrivals, departures
The day we departed I set my watch to Sydney time, our arrival city. I calculated my meals to coincide with the new time zone. Further, we scheduled our sleep (and naps) to coincide with our new time zone, no matter how jet-lagged we felt.

Early morning sunshine and exercise helped get us started. Michael and Susan Ellison as well as everyone in our entourage were up at dawn walking in the early morning sun to get our circadian cycles adjusted (sunlight resets your body clock). We worked in the evening to keep ourselves from going to bed too early. Our target was 9 p.m., no matter what time zone we were in. Peaceful Sleep™ capsules really helped us get to sleep and stay asleep as we made the time zone transition.

Even within the country we changed time zones frequently. But we had already established our disciplines and they were working well; no one was sick! 8. Practice Gratitude – Research studies indicate that self-centered people who do not express an attitude of gratitude are more likely to develop heart disease. Selfish, self-centered people are often lonely, and lonely people tend to have a short life expectancy. Start a "Gratitude from A to Z" list; write down something that you're thankful for starting with "A" (apples, air, Aunt Ruthy, etc.), and add an item every day until you get to "Z." OK, I will admit it if you will:
I have forgotten the names of people while I was talking to them!
I have lost my car keys, misplaced my glasses and
turned the wrong way on my drive home.

How about you?
Does it seem like your memory is playing tricks on you as you age?

How to make a memory
Your memory is an amazing miracle.
Every second your brain processes billions of bits of information from your five senses.
You may consciously perceive only a very small percentage of this information
because one function of your brain is to filter out unimportant information.
The things you remember will usually be advantageous to you.
For instance, remembering your wedding anniversary date or remembering where
the speed trap is on your drive home.

Memory is classed into two basic groups:

Short-term:
Short term memories are quickly forgotten when they are no longer important.

Long-term:
Long-term memories may be divided into recent and distant.
Practicing or rehearsing can improve your memory by moving more information into long-term.
For instance, when I am distracted by stress I will not be able to remember where I left my car keys.
That information was deleted from my short-term memory.
However, if I consciously say, "I am hanging my car keys on the hook,"
I am far more likely to remember where they are.

A professor of mine once told me that newly graduated doctors have 100 cures for every disease. Experienced doctors often use one remedy for 100 diseases. It seems that this is proving to be quite true with our old friend, Vitamin C.

New uses for an old remedy
Three articles in medical literature recently caught my attention.

Toxins
The first one was a two-year-long discussion about the protective effects of Vitamin C against pesticides and other environmental toxins. This is important because we dump 2.5 million tons of pesticides into our biosphere every year (Environmental Medicine part 4, Dr. Walter Crinnon).

The discussion of Vitamin C and pesticides was published in 2007 and 2008 in the journal Toxicology and Industrial Health. It clearly shows the protective effect of large amounts of Vitamin C against common environmental toxins.

Cholesterol
The second article appeared in the February 2008 edition of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. It demonstrated another benefit of Vitamin C in people with elevated cholesterol. You see, Vitamin C in the liver binds excess cholesterol and drains it through the bile ducts into the intestines. Fiber in the intestines soaks up the cholesterol and carries it out of the body. If our diet does not have enough fiber to eliminate the cholesterol we will likely reabsorb it. In fact, most of the cholesterol in our bloodstream has been excreted and reabsorbed numerous times.

Vitamin C binds cholesterol and takes it out of the liver. Vitamin C also helps protect the lining of blood vessels – making them like Teflon to sticky LDL cholesterol. Instead of damaging the blood vessels, oxidized LDL slides off the walls of your arteries and is carried back to the liver by HDL cholesterol.

Blood pressure
The third article came from the October 2008 Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypertension. It clearly showed how large reservoirs of Vitamin C can help reduce high blood pressure. The process of inflammation starts with injury, toxicity, deficiency or emotional distress. One particular deficiency that causes inflammation is a genetic deficiency called MTHFR. This deficiency is relatively common – perhaps the most common genetic deficiency in North America. It is related to the way we manufacture proteins. A sign that we have MTHFR deficiency is elevated homocysteine.

MTHFR deficiency creates pools of homocysteine that ignite inflammation like bonfires in specific tissues of your body. The strategies for reducing this inflammation depend greatly on where the bonfire starts. And, like many forest fires, inflammation often features multiple fronts that require different strategies for quelling its flames.

Burning brain The delicate tissues of the brain are common victims of inflammation from an MTHFR deficiency. Elevated homocysteine feeds the fire that melts fragile neurons. Movement disorders like Parkinson's disease and dementias such as Alzheimer's disease are associated with elevated homocysteine. We live in a toxic world. Each year in the United States alone we introduce six billion pounds of pollution into our environment. And that is only the amount of chemicals reported to the EPA. Each of these chemicals has now found its way into our air, ourtreams, our drinking water and our food chain.

Of course, every chemical is not necessarily harmful. Many break down in a very short time. However, others remain for long periods of time in our environment. A recent news report detailed the wide array of drugs – from pain killers and birth control pills to antibiotics – that are contaminating the water supply of most US cities. It’s no wonder many of us are feeling a little toxic these days.

The detoxification process
When a toxin enters your body a special family of enzymes goes into action. These are called cytochrome P450 enzymes or “CYP.” The toxin is an abrasive tangle of sharp edges like a ball of steel wool. It must be unfolded by the CYP enzyme and ironed out so it is completely exposed. Then your liver saturates the entire surface of this unfolded toxin with antioxidants. Once the toxin is saturated, the CYP enzyme turns the steel wool into a water soluble jelly. Toxins that are completely broken down will be excreted as harmless waste through your breath, colon, urine, skin and mucous membranes.

Every stage of this detoxification process requires nutrients. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in North America. Two thirds of the adults are either overweight or obese. Initiatives by civic and government organizations, advertisements on television and even meetings within our houses of worship all point to approaches and solutions for obesity.
But what about chronically thin people who need to gain weight? What help is there for them?
The answer may surprise you.

Too thin
Being too thin is more than a cosmetic problem; itÂ’s a health issue, too. For example, thin bodies tend to make fewer reproductive hormones, which can lead to infertility in both men and women.

People with low body mass also have low bone density. In osteoporosis, loss of bone density becomes so severe that bones can easily break. There are 108 boys born in the USA for every 100 girls. Yet, by age 5 the numbers are about even for boys and girls.
By age 65 the numbers are significantly different: 235 women for every 100 men. There are several causes of this disparity. The first is genetic.

That pesky “Y” chromosome!
Genetically, men have just one “X” chromosome and one “Y” chromosome. Women, meanwhile, have two “X” chromosomes. This means that men have a lower number of disease-protecting genes in total. So, women are genetically more robust than men because men have:
• Fewer chromosome surfaces over which to spread out disease risk
• Fewer foundations upon which to build health
That means that men need to take better care of themselves, and not neglect the gift of life and health.

Beyond genetics - other risks for men

• Risky lifestyle
When we look at health risks, men tend to engage in more risky, dangerous behaviors and generally live more hazardous lives than women. Men tend to smoke more, drink more, donÂ’t wear their seatbelts as often and donÂ’t have regular preventive medical and dental care.

For the first time in recorded history, children born in North America today are not expected to live as long or as well as their parents. This startling trend may have its roots in the nutrition of our parents or grandparents. The trend continues through our generation. Truly, the "sins of the parents" are visited upon their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.

How did we get into this predicament and what can we do to change the trend?

Before you go to bed, make it a point to forgive anyone who has offended you. If you find forgiveness itself difficult, a great first step is just acknowledging that you're holding a grudge.

8. Practice Gratitude – Research studies indicate that self-centered people who do not express an attitude of gratitude are more likely to develop heart disease. Selfish, self-centered people are often lonely, and lonely people tend to have a short life expectancy. A sucker list is a list of people who have previously been successfully solicited for something.

The major source of "sucker lists" are solicitation of donations and fraud.

An early example of "sucker lists" made public is given in the November 18, 1929 issue of
Time Magazine[1] in an article about the United States Senate probing into one lobbyist.

People who become victims of, say, a telemarketing fraud, often are placed on a sucker list.
Sucker lists, which include names, addresses, phone numbers, and other information, are created,
bought, and sold by some fraudulent telemarketers. They are considered invaluable because dishonest
promoters know that consumers who have been tricked once are likely to be tricked again via the "reloading".
As a result, these persons became flooded with letters, e-mails and phone calls with various lottery wins,
investment plans, get rich quick schemes and work from home offers.

Yet another usage was described in the movie Sucker list, a part of the 1941 United States series
Crime Does Not Pay. The subject of the movie are fraudulent racetrack touts, who, in particular, used
to call people known to be in deep debt and give them false tips.

In the United States, when a person applies for a mortgage loan, the lender makes a credit inquiry about the
potential borrower from the national credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Unless the borrower is
opted out, the credit bureaus put the applicants onto a "trigger list" of "leads" about persons who are interested
in new loans. These lists are sold to numerous lenders all over the United States, and soon after the application
the applicant starts receiving offers from the opposite coast of the country. The trigger lists contain a significant
amount of personal financial information. [1] Among the buyers of trigger lists are "lead generators" which resell
filtered information to borrowers, e.g., of people who live in a certain area and have a certain credit score.

While the Federal Trade Commission considers the market of "trigger lists" to be a legal business, many people
and organizations (such as the National Association of Mortgage Brokers) consider this a serious breach of privacy
and lobby for putting this practice under regulatory controls.
